Missing Stations Forum:   Missing Stations

Topic: ABC classical music stations

Hi,

I am currently not able to help.

The fact is today:
Many of older radio receiver devices (i.e. PENBEX) are not able to run AAC streams.
All streams presented by ABC Radio are AAC.
Summery:
Older receiver devices will not play ABC Radio.

I informed the ABC Radio support ( https://help.abc.net.au/ ), that there are older receivers in use, which are not able to handle AAC.
If ABC Radio presents only AAC streams, a number of possible customers are not able to listen ABC Radio today.

I got the answer:
Overall we are moving more towards HLS streams, that are more managed.

This did not help us. Therefore I explained the situation again.

I received the next answer. And I learned, that they still not understud my item.
ABC help service told me, that my question was missing. And that was right. I discribed the bad situation - there was not really a question in it.
But now I was told, that ABC Radio wants customers via web access only, no radio receivers devices.

Here from the reply letter received:

Hi Norbert

I don't actually understand what streams you are asking for? It might be a German to English thing, but your syntax is making things slightly unclear - I might have missed the question in your contact.

Are you asking for a specific stream in MP3? or some other format?

My reply basically meant that the streaming team don't want people using our old MP3 streams and they want to move to m3u8 adaptive HTTP (HLS) streams, but really, they only want you to access them via this website:

https://www.abc.net.au/listen/radio

They want to restrict people from accessing our streams in any other fashion, and to prevent access via third party sites. They say it relates to content-management and control of content.

Regards
ABC Audience Support

Hello Nobi,

I hope that everything is well.  I don't want to rush you, but it is over a week now since my last post (12 December) on this topic (ABC classical music stations), and you have previously been generously prompt in replying.

I would just like to check whether or not you saw the post and might get around to responding eventually.

Many thanks again for all your efforts on this.

Thank you.

I have tried adding these streams under my user name.  (I am not sure about the bit rates; is there a way of determining these, and does it matter?)

They have not yet appeared under my user name (pstokoe1) in World Stations > MyFavorites on my device, but I look forward to testing them when they appear there.  (Note that there is an entry in MyFavourites for my former username, just "pstokoe", but I no longer use this username or have access to it; it may be deleted as far as I am concerned.)

Many thanks again for all your help.

It seems that the ABC classical music stream addresses in the station directory that were previously MP3 have recently (as of about a month or two ago) been converted to AAC.  I don't know whether or not any of the stream addresses listed by William would work as MP3 streams on my Penbex radio.  I cannot test this (or indeed check whether or not they are indeed "pure" MP3 streams) unless they are in the station directory.  I do not know whether or not this is something either of you could do.
Hi,
you can add a station as private.
In that case it will only be added to your "myfavorite" list and not the main database.
Then you can test on the device if the stream is working for you.
If it does, report here and we will add it to the main database.

BR,
William

Dear pstokoe1,
I just have checked it - you are right: BBC Radio 3 is only available including the Advanced Audio Coding update today.

Nobi

Many thanks Nobi and Penbex/William for your thorough responses.

Yes, I had surmised that my Centrios 1315117 Penbex radio will not play AAC streams, although they do appear in the station directory on the device.  I had wondered whether or not this might be fixed by a firmware/codec update, but it is good to know for sure that this is not possible so that I don't waste any time trying to determine this.

I just hope that others of my favourite classical music stations do not convert from MP3 to AAC!  It seems that this also happened to BBC Radio 3 (UK) a few years ago.

William, many thanks.

pstrokoe1, I'm sorry. The PENBEX devices are not able to play AAC streams, as William confirms.
And ABC Classic is only available including Advanced Adio Coding, as I described before (here below, December 7, 2025, 1:26 pm).

None of the Penbex devices (includion the Centrios) is able to play AAC streams.
The reason is that the hardware is really old.
The CPu is too slow to handle AAC.
Additionally the codec decoding (mp3 etc.) is done by using a hardare chip. This chip can not be updated.

The only solution is to find MP3 streams. Either directly from the station or some rebroadcaster.
You could try the following:
ABC Classic FM : http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/2FMW/mp3/;*.mp3
ABC Classic 2: http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/FM2W/mp3/
http://live-radio02.mediahubaustralia.com/2FMW/mp3/
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/5FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/3FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/8FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/4FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/2FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/6FMW/mp3/stream.mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/5FMW/mp3
http://live-radio01.mediahubaustralia.com/8FMW/mp3
I think the xFMW are localisations, 5=adelaide, 3=mebourne, 4=brisbane, 6=perth etc.
rebroadcaster?: https://stream.zeno.fm/9ggzewdrr68uv

Note that streams that are AAC should be marked as such so that they are not visible on the devices that can not play these streams.

Unfortunately, no one has made a concrete statement yet.
Maybe you can do a test yourself.

There are radio stations with streams without and with AAC.
Put two such channels of a station in your Radio Favorites (for better handling) and test whether the version with AAC also works on your radio receiver.
Here are the links to an example for the experiment:

* Radio Mixtape

* Radio Mixtape [AAC]

Bad situation - sorry!
The ABC Classic channels basically deliver MP3 streams. But unfortunately AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is added by ABC Classic and we get an mp4a format.
There are certainly devices that cannot run AAC. But I can't say whether your receiver device is affected by this.

I hope someone in the forum here can answer this.

Hi Nobi,
Thank you for replacing the links with these new ones.  I went to Location > Oceania > Australia and found them there.  However, when I select either of these entries on my Centrios 1315117, I get "Connecting" briefly and then "Data Prcocess Err(11)".  Any ideas why I get this error, and how I might correct it?  Thank you again.

Hi pstokoe1,
there are updated records available now:

 *  ABC Classic

 *  ABC Classic 2

Please have a look, try it and tell us please.

I have not been able to access the ABC (Australia) classical music stations (ABC Classic FM and ABC Classic 2) on my Centrios 1315117 (Penbex) internet radio as of about a month or two ago.  They both worked fine until then.  Any help/advice to restore these would be welcome.  Thank you.
